Urban History

The construction of this ground-breaking project during Romania’s communist regime lasted three years. It was the first luxury hotel in Romania, designed to become a reference for the country. At the time of construction, University Square was home to numerous shops and breweries which were demolished to build the hotel and the Romanian National Theater nearby.

Due to its ultra-central location, the hotel has witnessed important events over the years. University Square has become a preferred public gathering place for Romanians. The hotel’s rooms and apartments have welcomed famous guests, from presidents and royals, to athletes and important businessmen. It has also served as a location for several movie projects and TV shows.

The Hotel Today

Grand Hotel Bucharest continues offering guests 5* quality at the heart of the city. Looking to the future, the hotel is undergoing an extensive yet unobtrusive refurbishment project, with a total investment of 21 million euros, due to be completed by the end of 2024.
